David Koteles (Playwright) recently had his first
two New York productions. His one-act film noir comedy "The Trick" was in the HOMOgenius Festival at Manhattan Theatre
Source, and Bald Diva! recently opened the Fresh Fruit Festival at Clemente Soto Velez, where it won a festival award
for best writing. Bald Diva! later reopened at the Red Room for an extended run.
Some of David's earlier plays have been produced in Los Angeles and
Seattle. He's also had numerous New York workshops and readings of his work at such places as Ensemble Studio Theatre,
Manhattan Class Company, Alice's Fourth Floor, and the Westbank Café.
David graduated summa cum laude from Queens College, where he was
made Phi Beta Kappa. He is currently getting his Masters degree from Columbia University, studying playwriting with
Eduardo Machado, Leslie Ayvazian, Frank Pugliese, Theresa Rebeck and Kelly Stuart. David is the recipient of the John
Golden Award for Playwriting, a Columbia University departmental Assistantship, a Richard Rodgers Fellowship, and a Howard
Stein Fellowship.
David also writes poetry. He studied with poet Kimiko Hahn,
and has co-taught creative writing and poetry workshops with Ms. Hahn in the Queens Public Library System. David won
the Melvin Dixon Prize for his collection of poems "1969."
David is presently teaching creative writing and poetry to gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender senior citizens at SAGE/Queens in Jackson Heights.
Look for his next production in the 2004 HOMOgenius Festival this
June.
